Broward County, Florida — A North Lauderdale man, whose odd behavior prompted calls to 911 and sent deputies to the scene of the disturbance, was transported to the hospital where he later died. Broward Sheriff’s Office homicide detectives are investigating.

At approximately 10:30 Monday night, BSO deputies were dispatched to a disturbance call at Kimberly Boulevard and Southwest 66 Avenue in North Lauderdale. Witnesses said a man was standing in the roadway, banging on doors and trying to get into passing vehicles. One caller reported hearing an altercation and banging on doors and windows at a neighbor’s house. Witnesses said the man, who was later identified as 40-year-old Shawn Simpson, was covered in blood.

When deputies arrived at 890 S.W. 66 Ave., they saw broken glass and a bloody Simpson trying to get inside the house through the front picture window. Concerned for the safety of those inside the residence, one deputy deployed a Taser. Homicide detectives said the deployment was not effective, due to the fact that one of the probes did not make contact with Simpson.

North Lauderdale Fire Rescue paramedics transported Simpson to Florida Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. Homicide detectives learned that Simpson’s girlfriend lived at the residence with her children and her brother. Simpson had been staying with her for less than two weeks. She was at work when her children called her to tell her something was wrong with Simpson. Afraid, the children locked Simpson out of the house. Simpson’s aunt and girlfriend later told homicide detectives they have seen his abnormal behavior before and that Simpson has been Baker Acted in the past. Detectives confirmed that Simpson was Baker Acted in 2011.

The Broward Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the cause and manner of death. Homicide detectives said ME investigators documented a deep, self-inflicted laceration on Simpson’s inner left wrist that explains the large amounts of blood reported by witnesses.

Per BSO policy, Lt. Robert Beckmann, Sgt. Thomas Thyroff, Dep. Mark Delio and Dep. Simone Payne were placed on administrative assignment, which is standard procedure for an employee involved in an incident resulting in death.
