LOS ANGELES — A 22-year-old man has pleaded no contest for threatening to shoot up South Hills High School in West Covina last year.

Dereck Peña of West Covina entered the plea yesterday to one felony count of criminal threats.

Peña was immediately sentenced to three years formal probation, was ordered to stay away from the school and his ex-girlfriend for five years and to participate in mental health counseling.

On Nov. 7, 2018, Peña, who was a former South Hills High student, communicated threats of violence against the school to an ex-girlfriend, the prosecutor said. The ex-girlfriend notified the authorities and the school was evacuated.

The case was investigated by the West Covina Police Department.
