Mass Shooting In New Zealand As World Cup Set to Begin

According to New Zealand public broadcaster RNZ, a shooting occurred in central Auckland Wednesday, resulting in the death of at least two people.

According to 9News, the gunfire erupted inside a building under construction on lower Queen Street about 7.22am NZST.

New Zealand police confirmed that multiple other people were injured and the suspected shooter is also dead. It was unclear if the suspect took his own life or was killed by police.

Officials have advised people to avoid the area. Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown said he is receiving regular updates from the police, although the exact details of the incident remain unclear, including the motive.

The incident has cast a shadow over the 2023 Women’s World Cup, scheduled to commence later in the day in Auckland.
