Massive Swarm of Bees on I-85 In N.C. After Serious Crash

MECKLENBURG COUNTY, North Carolina — Troopers are advising drivers to avoid the area at the Mecklenburg and Gaston county line after a bad crash on northbound Interstate 85.

At least three vehicles were involved – including a tractor trailer hauling honeybees and yellow jackets.

According to WSOC, there was a large swarm of bees in the area.

Crews were working to clear the scene. Traffic was backed up for miles.

News Release – NCDOT: A trailer carrying bees has overturned on I-85 North in Charlotte near the Gaston-Mecklenburg county line, blocking three lanes of traffic and causing delays through the area.

The trailer overturned at mile marker 28, near the weigh station at the Catawba River. Multiple NCDOT incident management units are on the scene. A beekeeper is also heading to the crash site. 

Lane closures are expected to be in place for several hours. Motorists are encouraged to seek alternate routes.
