MILWAUKEE — On Wednesday, around 5:00 p.m., a Milwaukee Police Officer was killed in the line of duty.
Milwaukee Police Officers responded to the 2800 block of West Wright Street to check for a suspect wanted on drug and gun violations.
Officers responded to the scene to search for the suspect. At 5:06 p.m. the suspect, identified as Jonathan Copeland, fired shots at the officers–fatally striking one of them.
Copeland was later arrested in the 2800 block of West Meineke Street and a weapon was recovered. Copeland, who has an extensive criminal history, was not wounded in the exchange of gunfire.
The fallen officer has been identified as Michael Michalski, a 17-year veteran of the force who leaves behind a wife and three sons.
