Over 1.5 million dehumidifiers are currently subject to a recall due to reports of nearly twenty fires, as reported by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. This recall applies to 42 different models of dehumidifiers, available under five brand names: Kenmore, GE, SoleusAir, Norpole, and Seabreeze.
These dehumidifiers, all manufactured by Gree Electric Appliances based in Zhuhai, China, were sold from January 2011 to February 2014 through major retailers across the nation, including Walmart, Home Depot, and Sam’s Club.
As stated by the CPSC, the dehumidifiers now under recall are prone to overheating, emitting smoke, and even igniting fires. Gree Electric Appliances has received reports of at least 23 fires, 688 incidents of overheating, and property damage totaling $168,000 associated with the recalled products. Consumers are advised to disconnect and cease using these dehumidifiers immediately, and to get in touch with Gree to arrange for a refund.
Identification of the recalled dehumidifiers can be done using their brand, model number, and capacity, all of which are provided in the CPSC’s official notice. These products are made of white, beige, gray, or black plastic and are available in various sizes, priced between $110 and $400.
