Three people were rescued from a Navy helicopter that crashed Tuesday morning in the water near the James River Bridge in Newport News, Virginia.

The Coast Guard said that the crash happened about 11:14 a.m. and that a civilian vessel helped rescue the three people from the downed helicopter, which was a U.S. Navy MH-60s. The cause of the crash was not immediately known.

Officials with the Navy said the three crew members that were aboard were on a “routine training mission.” They were transported to a naval medical facility in Portsmouth, Va.

They suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The crash will be investigated.

The helicopter is part of a fleet that is based at Norfolk Naval Station Chambers Field.

Newport News is near Naval Station Norfolk, the world’s largest navy port.
