LINCOLN, Nebraska — On November 29, 2015, at 8:47 p.m., officers with the Lincoln Police Department responded to the report of suspicious activity in the area of N. 73rd and Adams. An officer contacted two people seated inside a parked car, affixed with stolen license plates.
A man, seated in the driver’s seat, was found to have two felony warrants out of Merrick County. One warrant was for Terroristic Threats, the second for Obstructing a Peace Officer. Two other officers arrived on scene and were assisting with the arrest when the man stated he “wasn’t going to jail” and began to struggle with officers.
During the intense physical confrontation, one officer was placed in a headlock and punched several times in the face. The assailant then produced a handgun, firing it. One officer was shot in the right arm.
When the assailant pointed the gun again, possibly preparing to fire, he was shot by an officer.
The man, a 29-year-old from Central City, died at the scene.
During the incident, the passenger in the vehicle fled into a nearby residence. Officers surrounded the home and ultimately took five people into custody. All five were interviewed and released. The investigation is ongoing.
Upon conclusion, it will be turned over to the Lancaster County Attorney’s Office for review. This incident is considered an in-custody death and will also be presented to a grand jury.
The two injured officers were transported to local hospitals. One was treated and released for head injuries, the other is still hospitalized for treatment. All three officers directly involved are on administrative leave. An internal investigation is being conducted to ensure department policies and procedures were followed.
The identities of those involved are not being released at this time.
