NEW VIDEO: NYPD Cops Rescue Suicidal Man on George Washington Bridge

NEW YORK — (NYPD News) — Elite NYPD Emergency Service Unit (ESU) and Port Authority police officers used great team tactics and effective crisis communication skills to successfully rescue a despondent man atop of the George Washington Bridge Friday morning.

Emergency Service Unit 2 responded to a call of a suicidal 54-year-old man on the George Washington Bridge where detectives from the ESU were met by Port Authority Police (PAPD) who informed them that a man was climbing up the cables to the top of the westside tower.

The ESU detectives with the assistance of PAPD officers ascended the tower via the elevator.

Once they reached the top of the tower the man was standing at the edge threatening to jump. Detective Raul Gonzalez of ESU 2 took time to established a dialogue with the man allowing him to come closer to the officers.

Detectives Brandon Watson and Raul Gonzalez were able to rescue the him and bring him to safety.

The man was removed to Bergen Regional Hospital for evaluation.
