Mount Aso, The Largest Volcano In Japan, Is Erupting

TOKYO — (scroll down for video) — Mt Aso, a volcano located on Japan’s southernmost main island of Kyushu, erupted on Monday, according to Japan Today, sending up huge plumes of grey ash and smoke.

There are no reports of injuries at this time.

Mount Aso is the largest active volcano in Japan, and is among the largest in the world. It stands in Aso Kujū National Park in Kumamoto Prefecture, on the island of Kyushu. Its peak is 1592 m above sea level.

From Daily Mail: Dozens of flights have been cancelled across southern Japan after a volcano erupted for the first time in 22 years.

Mount Aso, located about 625 miles southwest of Tokyo, on Kyushu island, has been blasting out chunks of magma since Friday morning, causing flight cancellations from Kumamoto, the nearest city, and prompting warnings to stay away from its crater.
