Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez announced that a Brooklyn man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison following his manslaughter conviction for stabbing a Greenpoint man to death in 2017. The victim was less than a block away from his home when he was killed in front of his wife.
District Attorney Gonzalez said, “This was a brutal and unprovoked attack that left an innocent man dead and his wife forever traumatized. Nothing will bring George Carroll back, but with today’s sentence we have obtained a measure of justice and ensured that this defendant will no longer be a threat to anyone else in our community.”
The District Attorney identified the defendant as Gary Correa, 24, of Brooklyn. He was sentenced by Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Jane Tully to 20 years in prison and five years’ post-release supervision. The defendant was found guilty of first-degree manslaughter on January 20, 2022, following a jury trial.
The District Attorney said that, according to the investigation, on August 18, 2017, at approximately 9:25 p.m., the victim, George Carroll, 42, was walking home with his wife on Monitor Street when he encountered the defendant and a small group of people on the steps of P.S. 110.
According to the investigation, Carroll and the defendant made eye contact and had a brief verbal exchange. The defendant then stood and started yelling at Carroll and his wife as they attempted to leave. The defendant then retrieved an approximately eight-inch-long knife from his Dodge Durango which was parked in front of the school. The defendant then followed Carroll down the street and stabbed him once in the chest.
According to the investigation, the defendant then fled the scene in his SUV as Carroll lay bleeding on the sidewalk. Carroll was pronounced dead at Woodhull Hospital.
The defendant was arrested by the New York City Police Department on August 31, 2017.
