NEW YORK — Officers from the NYPD’s Critical Response Command saved a man in the Hudson River early Tuesday morning. Officers Rajub Bhowmik and Ismael Mercedes were alerted to a male in the water in the vicinity of 50 Battery Place in Lower Manhattan and responded to the South Cove Marina where they observed a 49-year-old man struggling in the water at the location.

Police Officer Bhowmik removed his gunbelt, entered the water, and secured the man, ensuring he would not drown.

Police Officer Mercedes used his department radio to request the NYPD Harbor Unit to respond. Harbor Unit officers arrived at the location and two divers entered the water and removed the man to the North Cove Marina.

The man was then transported by EMS workers to Bellevue Hospital for treatment and evaluation.

It is believed the man had jumped into the water in an attempt to commit suicide. Police Officer Bhowmik was removed from the water by fellow officers on land, and was transported to New York University Downtown Hospital for evaluation.
