“After responding to the bank, Lieutenant Ramos uploaded the suspect’s picture to his smartphone and then sent it out to the rest of us who were searching for the suspect,” said Police Officer Vandenberg.
“When I saw the picture on my phone the man was wearing a very distinct jacket, I recognized him right away. We made a quick U-turn and followed him to a nearby building, then we called for back up.”
A police officer who had responded to a Manhattan bank robbery was able to place the suspect under arrest, spotting him blocks away from the incident. On Wednesday, March 8, Police Officer Vandenberg and his partner, Police Officer Iqbal, both of the Strategic Response Group, were canvasing the area after a robbery occurred at a Santander Bank on Broadway.
The man fled empty handed, but was captured by surveillance cameras. After viewing a picture of the suspect on his department-issued smart phone, the officers began to canvass the area. A short time later, Police Officer Vandenberg observed a male fitting the description on West 109 Street. The two police officers stopped the suspect and after further investigation, they placed him under arrest.
