OFFICERS SHOT AT IN DOWNTOWN MODESTO, CA.

MODESTO, CALIFORNIA — PRESS RELEASE — (JUNE 1) About 11:23 PM, Modesto Police received calls that a group of people near 8th St and H St in Modesto were in an altercation. It was also reported firearms were seen on some of the involved people. Those reported to be armed began getting into a vehicle and leaving the area.

Officers arrived shortly after and located a vehicle described in the 911 calls. Officer attempted to initiate a traffic stop however the driver failed to yield and a brief pursuit ensued downtown. Officers utilized the PIT (Pursuit Intervention Technique) near Downey St and I St and successfully stopped the vehicle.

Occupant’s emerged from the vehicle and began shooting at officers all the while fleeing toward the residential neighborhoods. Multiple patrol vehicles were hit by bullets from the suspect. Three officers returned fire stopping the suspect from running into the neighborhoods. The suspect was taken to a local area hospital and is listed as being in critical condition. The other two occupants in the vehicle were not injured and taken into custody.

Details of the events leading up to the officer involved shooting are under investigation; however the preliminary investigation has revealed a suspect’s firearm at the scene. It is unknown exactly how many shots were fired during the incident.

The suspects face multiple criminal charges stemming from the incident, though further details will not be available until investigators complete their initial investigation.

Modesto Police detectives, along with personnel from the Stanislaus County District Attorney’s Office, are investigating the incident. No officers were injured during the incident. They have been placed on paid administrative leave as the investigation progresses. Both are standard procedure in officer involved shooting incidents.
