Officials in Oklahoma are investigating an inmate death at the Pawnee County jail.

Around 3:00, on July 24th, twenty-six-year-old Brittany Weide DeVerges was booked into the Pawnee County jail for public intoxication and possession of paraphernalia. DeVerges was placed into a detox cell. Deverges was observed at approximately 10:30 and it was determined DeVerges should remain in the detox cell awhile longer.

At noon on the same day, DeVerges was found unresponsive in the cell. She was observed with a handgun on her stomach and an apparent gunshot wound to the chest.

Police believe DeVerges smuggled the weapon into the jail on her person. The investigation is ongoing and reports will be turned over to the Pawnee County District Attorney’s office upon completion.
