On-Duty Kansas City Police Officer Commits Suicide

Kansas City, MO — A veteran Kansas City police officer reportedly killed himself Sunday.

“It is with very heavy hearts we have to report the tragic loss of one of our own,” the department said in a statement. “This afternoon, the Overland Park Police Department and officers from our department, responded to a check the welfare call. The officer who was on duty in an administrative assignment, on a break, was missing in his personal vehicle and feared to be suicidal. Overland Park Police Department assisted us in the area to locate his vehicle. The officer was located in his personal vehicle in Overland Park, Kansas. Unfortunately, he was found deceased at the scene from an apparent suicide. The officer was a dedicated officer who served our department for approximately 8 ½ years and was assigned to our Patrol Bureau.”

“We have activated our volunteer chaplains and all the peer support resources available to department members at this time. Please keep the officer’s family and our department in your thoughts and prayers. We ask you to please respect the family’s privacy at this time.”

The identity of the officer was not immediately revealed.
