A section of Interstate 95 in Philadelphia collapsed in the early hours of Sunday following a vehicle fire, resulting in the closure of the major highway and giving travelers in the region headaches.

The incident prompted transportation officials to issue warnings about extensive delays, street closures, and advised motorists to avoid the affected area. While initial reports suggested that the vehicle involved might have been a tanker truck, officials were unable to confirm this.

Videos captured at the scene depicted a substantial concrete slab from I-95 crashing onto the road below in the northeastern part of Philadelphia. There were no reports of injuries.

Derek Bowmer, the battalion chief of the Philadelphia Fire Department, stated that the northbound lanes of I-95 were completely destroyed, while the southbound lanes were compromised due to the intense heat generated by the fire.

It was unclear when the section of highway would reopen.
