Women have multiple options available if they are looking for birth control. Some women prefer a long-acting reversible contraceptive option, usually shortened to LARC, because they do not have to worry about taking a pill every day. One of the most popular options that fall in this category is an IUD.

IUD stands for intrauterine device. This is a device that is implanted in the uterus to prevent conception. There are numerous IUD options available, and some women have been looking for an option that does not use hormones because they want to limit their side effects. That is where Paragard has become a popular option.

This IUD was introduced in 1987. It became popular because it does not lead to the same side effects as a hormonal birth control option. In addition, it is supposed to be safe and effective for more than a decade, and it is no bigger than a quarter.

Unfortunately, several women have suffered severe injuries related to the breakage of the Paragard. This has led some women to file an IUD lawsuit. What types of injuries are women suffering, and what does this mean for IUDs.

Examples of Injuries Stemming from a Paragard IUD

Even though most women will not suffer significant side effects or complications, some people may suffer serious injuries. In addition, some of these injuries can lead to a substantial impact on mental and physical health.

Some of the most common examples of IUD injuries include:

  • Uterine Expulsion: There are some situations where the Paragard IUD will not stay in the uterus. It may fall out of the uterus entirely, and it could expose someone to suffer any severe infection.

  • Uterine Perforation: In rare situations, the device could tear through the uterus entirely. This can lead to severe abdominal and pelvic issues, including heavy bleeding. This could also make it more likely for someone to suffer an internal infection.

  • Ectopic Pregnancy: Even though an IUD is supposed to prevent someone from getting pregnant, there are cases where the pregnancy could occur outside the uterus walls. If the pregnancy is allowed to progress, it could lead to an internal rupture, causing heavy internal bleeding.

These are just a few of the many potential injuries that someone may suffer from a Paragard IUD. While these complications are rare, they can be severe.

Lawsuits Against Paragard Begin To Mount

Unfortunately, numerous women have suffered significant complications stemming from the Paragard IUD. All women must talk to their doctors about their birth control options. That way, they can determine if they are at risk of suffering complications from the Paragard IUD. There are other birth control options available that do not have the same risk profile. Finally, anyone who has suffered a severe complication stemming from an IUD should reach out to a legal professional to discuss their options. Some of these injuries can lead to lifelong complications, which can be stressful and expensive.
