Camden, N.J. – The boyfriend of a woman found dead inside her Camden home on Monday has been charged in her death.

Edwin Zavaleta, 28, of Camden, has been charged with one count of first-degree Murder and one count of fourth-degree Tampering with Evidence.

On May 10, police responded to their home 1000 block of S. 6th St. around 8:45 a.m. for a report of a woman found unresponsive. Officers discovered Tonia Yamileth Zavaleta, 25, dead in an upstairs bedroom.

Zavaleta’s cause of death was listed as “a stab wound and blunt force trauma to the neck.”

Detectives say Edwin Zavaleta allegedly killed his girlfriend before “staging it to appear as a suicide.” He was arrested and transported to the Camden County Correctional Facility awaiting a detention hearing.

A motive for the attack was not disclosed.
