During a qualifying race on Saturday night for the AMSOIL Sprint Car National Championship at Lawrenceburg Speedway, Owen’s car crashed into the outside wall and rolled multiple times along the third turn.

Following the incident, USAC cancelled the remainder of the event. Owen, who was 26 years old, was the reigning track champion at Lawrenceburg Speedway and had won two features and the title in 2022. He had been competing in the sprint car division at the 3/8-mile dirt oval for several seasons and his 2022 title was his first at the track.
