NEW YORK — David Sweat was airlifted from Potsdam to Albany Medical Center Sunday night, after being shot and captured.
Escaped convict David Sweat has been caught, bringing the 3-week-long manhunt to an end.
Sweat was apprehended in Constable, New York, Sunday.
Sweat and his accomplice, Richard Matt, had originally planned to flee to Mexico before the two split up 5 days agp, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said in a radio interview today.
Investigators have already started getting important information from captured inmate Sweat, who is now undergoing treatment at Albany Medical Center, ABC News reported..
“The plan was to head to Mexico, which would have been aided by Joyce Mitchell’s vehicle,” Cuomo said. “They would get the car and then drive to Mexico.”
A NY State Police Official, identified as Sgt. Jay Cook, noticed the escaped killer ‘jogging’ along a roadside and approached him.
The suspect ran, on foot, through an open field and Sgt. Cook pursued him.
Sweat was shot twice by Sgt. Cook in the abdomen as he ran toward a tree-line.
Sweat was transported to the Alice Hyde Medical Center in Malone. He was later moved to Albany Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition, according to CNN.
More than 1,200 officers on the scene of the manhunt have completed their goal after 23-days of searching.
The news comes more than three weeks after Sweat broke free from Clinton Correctional Facility, and two days after his partner was killed by law enforcement.
Richard Matt, 49, the man who escaped with Sweat, 35, on June 6, was shot dead in Malone, which is about 40 miles away from the prison and 20 miles away from the Canadian border.
From The NYSP: At approximately 3:20 p.m. on June 28, Sergeant Jay Cook of the New York State Police spotted a suspicious man walking down a roadway in the Town of Constable.
Sergeant Cook shot and injured Clinton Correctional Facility escapee David Sweat. Sweat was taken into police custody alive, then taken to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries.
His condition is unknown at this time.
