On January 9th, over 5,000 migrants were recorded to have arrived on the Greek islands.

Greece has been warned that it needs to improve border security otherwise it could be removed from the EU’s passport-free Schengen zone.

Last week the European Commission approved a plan to send border guards from EU member states to Macedonia to stop Greece simply waving through refugees.

At least 344 people have been reported dead or missing this year while crossing the Mediterranean.

Greek police have reported that many migrants have lied about their age.

In 2015, over 1.1million migrants entered Germany.

Police have reported a rise in crime and sexual assaults as a result of the influx.
