ROASTED STEAK: 33 Calves Burned Alive When Tractor Trailer Hauling Livestock Catches Fire On New York State Thruway

On Thursday, November 7, 2013, just before midnight, NY State Police responded to a report of a tractor trailer fire on I-90 west in the Town of Leroy, Genesee County. The driver of the vehicle, Jeffrey A. Foss, 53, of Vernon, NY noticed flames coming from the right side of his trailer as he was headed west on I-90. He immediately pulled over and used his fire extinguisher, but the fire was too intense.

Bergenand and Calenonia fire departments responded to the scene and put the fire out. Of the 176 calves on board, 143 were saved. A livestock veterinarian, Dr. Gerald R. Vukman, responded to the scene and assisted with the care of the animals.

No injuries to human life were reported in the incident.
