BOSTON — An Everett man was arraigned today on charges he attacked a man on a scooter with a baseball bat in Friday morning’s rush hour traffic.

Travis El-Saadi was arraigned this morning in Boston Municipal Court on charges of armed assault with intent to murder, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury, and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. Prosecutors requested bail of $20,000 and orders that El-Saadi undergo a mental health evaluation, refrain from driving, and stay away had have no contact with the victim in the event he is to be released on bail. Judge Thomas Horgan set bail in the amount of $15,000 and ordered that the defendant not drive or have contact with the victim.

Shortly before 9:00 a.m. Friday, Boston Police were flagged down in the area of North Washington and Causeway streets, where a 49-year-old man was lying in the roadway next to a scooter. The man was bleeding from a deep laceration to his forehead and other injuries.

The victim was transported Massachusetts General Hospital for treatment.

Witnesses informed police that a gold Acura pulled in front of the victim, who was on his scooter, just before Causeway Street. A man in his 20s exited, approached the victim, and beat him with a baseball bat before returning to his vehicle and fleeing the scene. A witness recorded part of the incident on a cell phone, and additional witnesses were able to provide the license plate number of the suspect vehicle. Based on that information, police determined that the vehicle is registered to a relative of El-Saadi, prosecutors said.

“Witness assistance was crucial to identifying, locating, and apprehending the alleged assailant,” Conley said. “Members of the public helped investigators solve an extremely violent assault.”

The victim told police that the man who attacked him had been driving erratically and allegedly threw coins and attempted to spit at him prior to the incident. The victim was attempting to capture the vehicle’s license plate number when the man attacked him, prosecutors said. El-Saadi was later identified from a photo array.

El-Saadi was placed under arrest Friday afternoon at the Dorchester auto body shop where he worked.
