NEW YORK — (Video below) — NYPD officers from the 5 Precinct in Lower Manhattan responded early Wednesday morning to a call of an emotionally disturbed person on the Manhattan Bridge.

Upon their arrival, officers found a 22-year-old man on the outermost ledge, located on the exterior side of the safety fence. The Emergency Service Unit (ESU) also responded and began a dialogue with the individual.

Over the next 30 minutes, ESU officers continued crisis communication with the distraught man while other officers cut a hole in the fence.

Once the hole was completed, the officers traversed the fence from the top and flanked the individual, bringing him to safety through the fence. The man was uninjured and removed to an area hospital for help and evaluation.
