Boone County Brothers Identified As Victims Of Hypothermia

PETERSBURG, Kentucky — On Saturday, Boone County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the 4900 block of Garrison Creek Road in Petersburg, Kentucky for a report of two men that were found deceased.

Obie Fugate, 72, and Roy Fugate, 67, were found deceased by a family member who had arrived to the property that day to drop off firewood. Prior to discovering the deceased bodies, the family member located the Fugate’s truck which was found stuck in the mud and blocking a long gravel driveway which led to the Fugate’s residence. The broken down truck was located approximately .6 of a mile from the Fugate’s residence. The family member moved the truck and continued to drive up the gravel drive to find Obie Fugate lying deceased in the middle of the driveway. Obie Fugate was located approximately .3 of a mile from his residence. The family member continued to the residence where Roy Fugate was found deceased on his front porch.

Deputies located a McDonald’s bag lying next to Obie Fugate with a receipt dated 1/29/2019. Additionally, deputies located another receipt dated 1/29/2019 from the Dollar General. It is believed that 1/29/2019 is the last date any family member had contact with Obie and Roy Fugate.

Next of kin was notified and an autopsy was performed on both Obie and Roy Fugate. The preliminary report from the Medical Examiner’s Office states that the cause of death for both men is hypothermia. The Medical Examiner’s Office is still awaiting toxicology results before finalizing their report.
