SHASTA COUNTY, Calif. – An ‘experienced cliff and bridge jumper’ was killed when he jumped from Highway 89 into Lake Britton Wednesday, the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office said:

On Wednesday, 07/28/2021, at approximately 4:13 PM, the Shasta County Sheriff’ Office, Burney Division, received a report of a possible drowning on Lake Britton. It was reported that an adult male had jumped from the Lake Britton bridge, off Highway 89, and had not resurfaced.

Deputies, medical personnel, and the California Highway Patrol helicopter responded to the area. When deputies arrived on scene the victim had been under the water for over 30 minutes. Deputies, along with the California Highway Patrol helicopter, checked the surrounding area to see if the victim had made it to the shoreline, but were unable to locate him.

Further investigation revealed the victim was an experienced cliff/bridge jumper from the Reno, Nevada area. The victim was with a group of friends who had filmed him jumping from the bridge. The video showed the victim jump off the bridge and attempt a flipping maneuver before landing awkwardly in the water. Based on the information and circumstances the Shasta County Dive Team responded to assist in the search.

Dive Team members searched the area underneath the bridge, which was difficult due to dark, muddy water. At approximately 7:45 PM, Dive Team members located the victim, deceased, in approximately 37 feet of water. The victim was successfully recovered and turned over to the Shasta County Coroner’s Office. The identity of the decedent is not being released at this time pending notification of his next of kin.
