SUMTER, SC – No charges are expected following an incident Saturday morning in which a man entered a home and assaulted a woman before he was fatally shot.
Officers responded to a shots fired call after 4:15 a.m. on Robney Drive where they found a woman, who was beaten, and a man shot outside of a home.
Eugene Rhinehart III, 31, of Granada Drive, was taken to Prisma Health Tuomey where he died.
Samantha Funchess, 43, of the home, was taken to an area hospital where she is being treated for her injuries that are not considered life-threatening.
Police say Rhinehart “entered the home uninvited through an unlocked door and located Funchess, confronted her and began punching her.”
During the assault, she managed to get a gun that was in the home and shoot Rhinehart.
A 28-year-old man also was in the home at the time of the incident.
An investigation is ongoing.
