KNOX COUNTY, TENN. — Prosecutors in DA Charme Allen’s Child Abuse Unit obtained a twelve-year sentence against a stepfather who sexually abused a seven-year-old child. Justin Dewayne Bumby, 29, was convicted last month of two counts of Aggravated Sexual Battery. In a sentencing hearing today, Judge Scott Green sentenced Bumby to serve twelve years in prison without the possibility of parole.
At trial, Assistant District Attorney Nate Ogle and Acting Assistant District Attorney Faith Mote explained to the jury that a year ago, when the victim was in the second grade, Bumby sexually abused the victim on at least three occasions while her mother was at work. Bumby threatened the victim by telling her she would get in trouble if anyone found out about the abuse. The victim became scared of being home alone with Bumby and eventually disclosed the abuse to her elementary school counselor on January 18, 2017. Knoxville Police Department Investigator Jonathan Harris followed up on the disclosure that ultimately led to Bumby’s arrest. The victim’s biological mother testified on behalf of the perpetrator, but the jury ultimately believed the child, announcing their verdict after an hour of deliberation.
“When parents prey upon their children or defend those that do so, we have a responsibility to step in and protect that child,” said DA Charme Allen. “The hard work of the investigators and prosecutors in this case ensured the safety of this child.”
