Task Force Officer Injured, Homicide Suspect Killed In Virginia Shootout

HAMPTON, Virginia – The Hampton Police Division is investigating an officer-involved shooting incident that occurred on January 11, 2023.

Shortly before 11:20 a.m., the U.S. Marshal Task Force was in the area of Big Bethel Road and Todds Lane attempting to stop a vehicle occupied by a Hampton homicide suspect. The suspect immediately exited his vehicle and began discharging a firearm at the officers in turn, causing the officers to return fire. The suspect and one Task Force officer were struck as a result of the exchange of gunfire. Both were transported to a local area hospital to be treated for life threatening injuries. The suspect succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. The decedent’s identification is being withheld until next-of-kin is notified.

The suspect has been identified as Lamont Lee Lewis, a 46-year-old Hampton man. Lewis had active warrants on file for one count of 2nd Degree Murder, one count of Use of a Firearm in Commission of a Felony, one count, Possession of a Firearm by a Felon, and one count of Discharging a Firearm in a Dwelling in relation to a homicide that occurred on December 25, 2022.

The U.S. Marshal Task Force consisted of officers from U.S. Marshal Service, Hampton Police Division, Virginia State Police, Newport News Police Department, Norfolk Police Department, and Chesapeake Sheriff’s Office.
