SEATTLE — Detectives are investigating after a 17-year-old was fatally shot and in a south Seattle park early Saturday morning.

Witnesses began calling 911 just after 12:30 a.m. to report a boy had been shot multiple times in Martha Washington Park.

Officers converged on the park and found the teen in a wooded area suffering from three gunshot wounds. Seattle Fire Department Medics took the boy to Harborview Medical Center where he was listed in critical condition. He later died.

The witnesses told officers they had been playing in the park when a car pulled up and an unknown person began firing rounds into the wooded area. Detectives are now interviewing the witnesses in an attempt to develop a suspect description.

“We do not believe this young man was targeted in any way. We believe this is an isolated incident that occurred there,” Marc Garth Green, Seattle Police Department Assistant Chief said. “We do not believe this to be gang-related shooting at all. In fact, what this is is a group of young people taking part in a park because they heard there were ghost stories and it was haunted. So they were down there in the woods in the hours of darkness to kind of have a fun adventure. Unfortunately a tragic event happened there.”
