“I took the only chance that I had to save his life.” said Police Officer Miguel Donovan of the 48 Precinct Anti-Crime Team.

“Another police officer got his attention and I was able to creep up on his blind side and grab the man’s arm.”

Anti-Crime cops are usually known for making arrests and taking guns off the street. But this time a quick-thinking police officer was able to intervene in a tense stand-off and save a man’s life.

On Monday, April 23, Miguel Donovan was one of the police officers who responded to a call of an emotionally disturbed man at 189 Street and 3rd Avenue in the Bronx. When he arrived he observed a 50-year-old-man holding police officers at bay while pressing a box cutter to his neck and threatening to kill himself. When the man was distracted Police Officer Donovan rushed forward and was able to wrestle the suicidal man to the ground and disarm him. There were no injuries and the aided was removed to an area hospital for evaluation.

“It was a sensitive situation; you always want to help a person in crisis. But this was going on in front of a restaurant and by a bus stop. I’m glad that no one was injured,” said Police Officer Donovan.
