The three people were found dead in a Long Beach apartment Monday evening, the coroner reported.

The bodies, appearing unharmed, were discovered at approximately 7 p.m. on the 1100 block of Gardenia Avenue after police received calls about a foul smell permeating from a particular apartment unit.

While the cause of death is unknown,  a large portable propane heater was located inside the apartment, Long Beach police said.

Investigators said that heaters of this type are not intended for indoor use. If the victims had been using the heater indoors, it could produce deadly levels of carbon monoxide if the area is not properly ventilated.

The coroner identified the victims as a 50-year-old man, a 30-year-old woman, and a man whose age was unknown. Their names were withheld pending notification of family members.

An investigation is ongoing.
