Trademark Examiner To Google: You Can’t Trademark The Word ‘Glass’!

The US Patent and Trademark Office held up the company’s bid this week. According to the Wall Street Journal, an examiner with the trademark office raised two main objections to Google’s request. First, the trademark was already, in their estimation, similar to other existing or pending software trademarks containing the word “glass.”

At the same time, the examiner said that “glass” – even with its distinction by the Google Glass futuristic font logo – is only descriptive and not unique enough to earn trademark protection.

In a response, Google’s trademark attorneys submitted a 1,928 page letter two weeks ago defending its application. According to the Journal, 1,900 pages of the letter were clips of articles about Google Glass.

For now, at least, Google won’t prevail on its move. No word on a final decision from the patent office yet.
