Two children and their parents have tragically died and a third child is in critical condition after their SUV went into a suburban Phoenix lake.
Three police officers and a fisherman jumped in and pulled out the 27-year-old father, the 25-year-old mother, a 6-month-old girl and a two-year-old boy from Tempe Town Lake.
All four were taken to the hospital, where the parents and the six-month old died.
After the initial search, detectives realized a third child was missing.
Divers went to the submerged car and pulled out the body of a three-year-old boy.
Police initially said the two-year-old had died but now say he is in extremely critical condition.
Police spokesman Michael Pooley says emergency rescuers were called to Tempe Town Lake around 12:15 a.m. Sunday after bystanders saw the SUV enter the lake.
Pooley told KPHO: ‘It’s just a horrific scene, a horrific incident,” Pooley said. “These are the types of things our officers are going to carry with them for some time.
‘All the children were buckled into their sea.’
He added: ‘We don’t know what caused them to do this. We don’t know what happened. We don’t know really who they are yet. We have a good idea of who they could be but we’re still working on that, trying to find out where they were coming from, trying to contact anybody that may have been with them earlier.
