TENNESSEE —**UPDATE** Marcus A. Lewis, 35, was booked this evening on a charge of criminal homicide for Monday morning’s shooting death of his girlfriend, Samantha Crumpton, 36, inside her apartment.
Detectives in Nashville are investigating the fatal shooting of Crumpton inside her apartment in the Waterford Crossings complex on Old Franklin Pike.
Police were called to the apartment at 9 a.m. after a neighbor reported hearing a gunshot and a call for help.
Crumpton’s live-in boyfriend, Marcus A. Lewis, 35, admits to shooting Crumpton, but claims he did not know she was in the apartment. Lewis says he thought that he was confronting an intruder.
Metro Nashville Detectives have learned that Crumpton dropped her teenage daughter off at high school this morning and, at some point, returned to the apartment.
Lewis is claiming that he was in the bedroom when he heard a noise, armed himself, and went to investigate.
He says a figure came out of the kitchen area and that he fired one shot. Crumpton was struck in the shoulder and died shortly after arriving at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Lewis, who is unemployed, said he believed that Crumpton was at work at the time of the shooting.
Lewis has been detained and detectives expect to charge him with homicide later today. A search warrant has been obtained so that detectives and crime scene specialists can process the apartment.
Crumpton’s two children, ages 17 and 14, who were in school when the shooting occurred, received support from MNPD chaplains.
