NEW YORK — Emergency crews responded to at least 5 manhole cover explosions on the Upper East Side of Manhattan Tuesday afternoon—one was so powerful it lifted a car off the ground.
Utility crews and the FDNY were responding. The NYPD closed 1st Avenue near 70th and 72nd streets.
Nearby buildings were being tested for carbon monoxide levels. No serious injuries were immediately reported.
