US election 2016: What time are the election results?

Americans are now going to the polls to elect the 45th US president.

You can make sure you’re the first to know the winner by clicking here. 

50 states and Washington DC vote across six different time zones throughout Tuesday.

The majority of the US will have to wait for polling stations to close. Which is uaully between 19:00 EST (00:00 GMT) and 20:00 EST (01:00 GMT) – for state projections.

7pm EST: 

East Coast polling booths close and counting begins.

People will be watching the key battleground state of Virginia (13 electoral votes) very closely, which voted for Obama in 2008 and 2012.

Also projections are expected from Indiana (11), home to Trump running mate Mike Pence, Kentucky (8), South Carolina (9) and Vermont (3).

7:30pm EST:

Polls close in two states, North Carolina (15) and Ohio (18).

Ohio is one of the most anticipated results.

The swing state has backed the winner at every presidential contest except one since World War Two.

8pm EST: 

Polls close in 18 states, the most important being Pennsylvania.

This is also when the final polls close in Florida.

8:30pm EST: 

Polls close in Arkansas.

9pm EST: 

Polls close in 10 states, including Wisconsin and swing state Colorado.

10pm EST: 

Voting ends in swing states Nevada and Iowa and three others seen as safe Republican territory.

How are the projections made?

The networks have decision desks, statisticians who are kept away from the main news room, and whose job it is to come up with state-by-state projections.

Many other networks use AP and Edison Research, which carries out exit polls.

When will the winner be given the keys to the White House?

The new president and vice-president will be sworn in at noon on January 20, Washington DC time.
