BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – On Thursday, the California Department of Justice said it would investigate the Bakersfield Police regarding a shooting incident in mid-March that involved one of their officers.

The investigation was initiated in response to the BPD’s release of body camera footage from the incident, which resulted in a fatality on White Lane, close to South H Street.

According to the officers, they pursued 35-year-old Guillermo Huerta, who was running through what appeared to be a parking lot.

Huerta was ultimately shot by the officers, approximately half a mile from the point of initial pursuit.

The officers claimed that they believed he had a knife in his hand, but subsequent investigation revealed it to be a screwdriver.
