Flash-flood warnings have now been issued for areas within Los Angeles.

The warnings were issued Tuesday as the El Nino-powered storm drenched parts of California.

Los Angeles authorities say police are patrolling riverbeds to ask homeless people to leave low-lying areas as a major storm gains strength and rain gets heavier.

The mayor says that shuttles are available to bring people to shelters and that the city can make space for as many as 6,000 beds.

Fire Chief Ralph Terrazas confirmed that swift-water rescue teams are ready to launch.

There are reports of flooding on several roads including the 101 Freeway.

Peak rainfall rates may exceed one-half inch per hour during these periods and have the potential of causing flash flooding and mud and debris flows in and near recently burned areas, the weather service said.
