ILLINOIS — Decatur Police Department body cam video shows shots fired incident involving police officer and suspect.

The following is a news release from the Decatur Police Department:

On Friday, January 29, 2021, at 5:45 am, Decatur Police Officers were dispatched to a theft of a motor vehicle in the 1000 block of W. Eldorado. The information provided was that the vehicle was stolen by a male that was acting erratically. A short time later, the vehicle was located near the intersection of Cerro Gordo St and Van Dyke St and information was obtained that indicated the suspect had ran towards homes on Cerro Gordo St.

At this point, dispatch indicated they received a call that a person was trying to break in the back door and make entry into a house in the 1000 block of W. Cerro Gordo. As officers arrived on scene, they heard gunshots coming from the area of where the suspect was thought to be located. Officers then approached the last known area of the suspect.

Upon approaching the area where the suspect was believed to be, the officers observed the suspect at the back of the house on Cerro Gordo. Officers then confronted the suspect and identified themselves, at which time the suspect fired multiple shots at the officers. One Decatur Police Officer returned fire at the suspect. At this point, the suspect complied with the officer’s commands and was taken into custody. Neither the officers nor the suspect were hit by the gunfire. A firearm was recovered at the scene.

The suspect was identified as Gregory W. Lewis, 47, with an address in Springfield. Lewis did have active warrants for his arrest at the time of this incident. Lewis will be booked into the Macon County Jail on multiple charges related to the incident.

This incident was captured on the officers body-worn cameras. This investigation is active and on-going. Further information will be released at a later time.
