WATCH: (Scroll Down For Video) This is the moment that a teenager brutally punches the Spanish Prime Minister in the face after convincing security he wanted a selfie.

Mariano Rajoy, leader of the country’s right-wing Popular Party, was hit by the 17-year-old during a walkabout in the Galician city of Pontevedra ahead of general elections on Sunday.

The teenager bypassed his security guards by saying that he wanted to take a selfie with him,and footage shows him standing beside the politician, posing for photographers.

Footage then shows the teenager launch his left fist at Rajoy, striking him in the face and sending his glasses crashing to the floor.

He also hit a security guard when he was arrested at the scene and was pictured giving the thumbs-up and smiling as he was led away by police.

Rajoy, who is campaigning for what is expected to be one of the most open general elections in Spain, was shaken but unhurt.

His face looked red and marked when he appeared later in the evening in the nearby city of La Coruna for his last political meeting of the day.

Government minister Ana Pastor, who was with Mr Rajoy when the attack happened this afternoon, said: ‘I don’t have words to express the indignation I feel.’

The political leader tweeted while he was travelling to La Coruna: ‘I am fine, on my way to a rally in La Coruna. Let’s carry on constructing a serious Spain.’
