NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The woman who admits to fatally shooting Mykal Prime, 19, outside the Marathon market at 2810 John A. Merritt Boulevard at 8:25 p.m. Wednesday says she did so in self-defense after Prime pulled a gun and pistol-whipped her during an attempted marijuana-related robbery.
No charges are being placed at present against Khadijah Griffis, 25. The results of the completed investigation will be staffed with the District Attorney’s Office.
From what North Precinct detectives have learned at present, Prime got into the front seat of Griffis’ car, which had been parked at the gas pumps for several minutes, but didn’t shut the door. A struggle ensued, and Prime was shot as he exited the car. He collapsed in the parking lot. First responding officers recovered a Luger-style pistol underneath him.
Detectives located the man who dropped Prime off at the market. He acknowledged that Prime went there to buy marijuana from an unknown person.
At 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, police were notified that a woman (Griffis) had walked into Centennial Medical Center claiming to have been pistol-whipped during a robbery. Detectives went to the hospital and interviewed Griffis. She said that Prime sat in the front seat of her car, pulled a pistol and tried to rob her. She said a struggle ensued, during which she was able to shove Prime out of the car before pulling her own pistol and shooting Prime one time.
Griffis, who acknowledged that she was the marijuana seller, said she was scared and drove to her apartment before seeking medical attention for head injuries at Centennial. Detectives early today went to the apartment and recovered the gun as well as the clothing Griffis was wearing at the time of the shooting.
