Woman Shot After Pointing 2 Handguns at Police Officers Following Pursuit In Georgia

Whitfield County, GA. – On Wednesday, August 22, 2018, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) was requested by the Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office to investigate an officer involved shooting that occurred on I-75 southbound in Dalton, GA near the Walnut Avenue exit.

The GBI says Parrish Smaey, age 56, of Jonesboro, GA and a female subject were reportedly shoplifting in Bradley County, TN. During the shoplifting incident, store employees were threatened with a handgun. Hamilton County officials placed a lookout for Smaey and the female subject. A chase ensued with Hamilton County, Catoosa County, Georgia State Patrol, and Whitfield County authorities. Georgia State Troopers conducted a PIT maneuver to contain the vehicle with Smaey and the female subject in it. Smaey, who was the driver surrendered. The female subject fled in the vehicle. Whitfield County Sheriff’s deputies conducted a PIT maneuver to contain the vehicle with the female subject in it. She exited the vehicle with two handguns and pointed it at officers. Multiple officers from Hamilton County & Tunnel Hill Police Department fired at the female, striking her.

A Whitfield County Sheriff’s deputy trained as a medic provided life-saving treatment to her until she was airlifted to Erlanger Hospital where she remains in serious condition. Smaey was treated for minor injuries and released from Erlanger Hospital. He was booked in to the Whitfield County jail on charges of possession of a firearm by a convicted offender and possession of a stolen vehicle. Additional charges are expected for both Smaey and the female subject.

No officers were injured during this incident.
