A woman has faked her own death to get out of going to jail on a DUI charge, police have said.

On Wednesday, the woman, Darene Springs Weston, 43, who was on out on bond for a drug case and had four cases pending against her for shoplifting, DUI, and other charges, walked up to a county clerk in Rock Hill, South Carolina, and told them she had died, according toThe Charlotte Observer.

She presented herself as her mother, and handed over a forged document from the coroner’s office claiming she was dead, according to police.

She was apparently trying to get four court cases against her dismissed.

The clerk didn’t buy it, and alerted police, who conducted an investigation.

She was arrested on an obstruction of justice charge and now faces up to 10 years in prison.

Earlier in the week, she had been sentenced to 90 days in jail for not showing up to her court case stemming from an April arrest for DUI, giving false information to police, driving under suspension, and having an open alcohol container in her vehicle.

She remains in jail on $10,000 bond for the latest offense of faking her own demise.
