Yonkers Police Chase Ends with Fatal Accident

NEW YORK — The Yonkers Police Department continues to investigate the fatal motor vehicle accident which occurred yesterday afternoon on Warburton Avenue south of Odell Avenue. The driver of a 2011 Hyundai Sonata (lone occupant), who was pronounced deceased at the scene, has been identified as 46 year old female Yonkers resident Sharlene Stinson.

The suspect vehicle is a white 1997 Dodge Ram van, which had been reported stolen in the area of Warburton Avenue on 11-14-15. The two occupants of the stolen van are identified as a 16 year old male suspect and a 14 year old female suspect, both of whom are Yonkers residents. These two suspects are currently in a local trauma center in critical condition and no charges have been filed at this time as the criminal investigation is continuing.

Initial information has revealed that a 911 call was made to the Yonkers Police Communications Division at approximately 4:16 p.m., the caller related that occupants of the van were breaking into parking meters in the area of 4 Schroeder Street. Responding Officers in a marked police unit had been made aware of the stolen van at the start of their tour during their roll call briefing.

As the marked unit canvassed the area of North Broadway and Lamartine Avenue, the stolen van was observed. The marked unit followed the suspect vehicle and in the area of Warburton Avenue and Glenwood Avenue, made an attempt to pull the suspect vehicle over by activating their emergency lights. The suspect vehicle did not pull over and continued northbound on Warburton Avenue, where the suspect vehicle subsequently struck the Hyndai Sonata, which was travelling southbound on Warburton Avenue.

Based on witness statements and video obtained in the area thus far, the distance between the suspect vehicle and the marked unit fluctuated before the accident occurred.

Video also reveals that the suspect vehicle crossed over the double yellow line, driving northbound on the southbound side of Warburton Avenue.
