Yonkers Police Detective Dead Following Crash With Fire Truck

NEW YORK — Detective Frank Fernandez, 45, was killed Sunday when his SUV collided with a fire truck, officials said.

Police Commissioner Charles Gardner released the following statement to members of the Yonkers Police Department this morning on the passing of off-duty Detective Frank Fernandez:

“It is with a very heavy heart that I must inform you of the sudden and tragic loss of one of our own. Yonkers Police Detective Frank Fernandez passed away this morning after being involved in a motor vehicle accident on Palmer Road. During his tenure with the department he served with honor and distinction and was always available to help and support his fellow officers.

He facilitated several fundraisers for fallen officers and worked tirelessly for many charities including St. Baldrick’s, The Police Unity Tour and the Lt. Roy McLaughlin Scholarship Fund. Detective Fernandez was a well-respected member of our agency for over 15 years and a stellar detective for the past 8 years. Frank was a “go to guy” and his passing is a major loss to our YPD family.”
