The human remains discovered in Wyoming have been confirmed those of Gabby Petito.
Teton County Coroner Dr. Brent Blue’s initial determination for the manner of death is homicide. The cause of death remains pending final autopsy results.
Petito’s body was found Sunday near a campsite in the Bridger–Teton National Forest. At a press conference Sunday afternoon, the FBI said the remains were “consistent” with the missing 22-year-old’s description.
“I want to personally thank the press and news media for giving the Petito and Schmidt family time to grieve,” Stafford said in a statement from the family. “We will be making a statement when Gabby is home. I will contact you to arrange a time and location.”
Meanwhile, the person of interest in the case, Petito’s fiancée Brian Laundrie, has been missing since Friday.
