COLUMBUS, Ohio — Police say an officer attempting to shoot a charging dog accidentally shot a 4-year-old girl instead.

Columbus Police are investigating a police involved shooting in the city of Whitehall.

On June 19, at approximately 3:10 pm, an officer following up on a Columbus police accident report on Chandler Drive in Whitehall was flagged down by a woman on that street looking for help for her sister who suffered self-inflicted wounds.

The officer responded to the residence, 4197 Chandler Drive, and as he tried to offer help to the injured woman a dog inside the home charged him.

The officer fired one shot at the dog, missing it, instead accidentally striking a 4-year-old girl in the right leg.

The child, the daughter of the injured woman, was taken to Nationwide Children’s Hospital in stable condition. The injured woman was taken to Grant Hospital for her wounds.
