Activists protested the release of a former North Charleston police officer charged with killing an unarmed motorist.

Around two dozen people gathered outside the Charleston county jail.

They argued that ex-officer Michael Slager remains a danger to the community and a possible flight risk.

He is charged with murder in the April shooting of Walter Scott.

Circuit Judge Clifton Newman agreed with a defense request earlier Monday that Slager be released on a $500,000 surety bond.

He will remain under house arrest until his trial is set to begin next Halloween.

Slager, 35, faces 30 years to life without parole if convicted of murder.

In October a $6.5m settlement was reached with Scott’s family after it was approved by the North Charleston City Council in a 10-0 vote.

There were no aggravating circumstances such as robbery or kidnapping, so the death penalty doesn’t apply in the case, the prosecutor has said.
